There are three key design themes in this Spring/Summer 08 collection, each a graphic representation of traditional Japanese iconography, setting the tone throughout the Evisu collections. Sakura, or cherry blossom, are an enduring metaphor for the ephemeral nature of life and are represented in embroidery. Contrasting with the delicate pinks of the Sakura blooms, cheerfully grinning silver skulls form the basis of elaborate floral prints based on symbolically significant chrysanthemums. Linking these two extremes is the third theme, that of Bonsai, the art of the aesthetic miniaturisation of trees. The distinctive shapes formed are represented in detailed embroidery which form the daicock, or giant seagull shape. Highlighting the innovative nature of Evisu, handpainted daicocks in katakana (colloquial Japanese) read “Before Anyone Did Anything, Evisu Did Everything”.
